| Posted: 10 Jun 2012 12:55 AM PDT Prometheus Hollywood Movie Review, Prometheus Movie Review, Prometheus Review, Prometheus Movie Rating, Prometheus Movie verdict, Prometheus Movie story, Prometheus Movie climax, Cast : Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron Director : Ridley Scott Producer : Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, David Giler, Walter Hill Banner : 20th Century Fox Rating : 3.5/5 Few of us get an opportunity to better something we may have done before. Fewer have the guts to take that opportunity. And rarer still are those who create that opportunity for themselves. With "Prometheus", director Ridley Scott gives himself that opportunity, returning to familiar territory. In the end of the 21st century, after discovering signs that lead to the origin of man in another planet, a private corporation sends the ship Prometheus to investigate. In an alien, hostile planet, they discover a place that is almost like a sanctuary with its own atmosphere. However, in that place loom both the secrets to the origin of man and a horror that could lead to our end. As you watch the film unfold, you get the creepy feeling that you have seen it before; the plot, the story, the space ship, the creatures. As the story progresses, so does the sense of deja vu. Till the very last scene, screams out the word that was looming in your head - 'Alien'. The reference to the alien universe is so endless, that it will take someone completely unfamiliar with it to not notice. The script, despite being smart, is loose in certain ways. For example, when humans first encounter the new planet and discover tell-tale signs of intelligent life, there's no real surprise on their countenance. It is as if like Scott, the audience have been here before too. Or perhaps Scott was too busy diverting audience attention from the 'Alien' similarities of the film to pay attention to these small details in the script that would have made the film much more enjoyable. Even for those unfamiliar to 'Alien', it is a predictable film. It plays with the known cliches of the genre, while trying to go beyond in its visual spectacle. The little philosophical tirade about the origins of humanity, is also a little uncalled for. What redeems the film are its brilliant effects and the cast. Filmmaking technology has advanced so much in the last three decades since Scott made the first film, that it gives him a rare chance to better visual spectacle by a great margin. Secondly, the cast is impeccable. Michael Fassbender as the cyborg does a perfect job. Though you miss Sigourney Weaver, in Noomi Rapace you have a perfect, fiery candidate. Scott makes her survive more treacherous ordeals than he made Weaver go through. The attempt, even here, is to outdo the original. Thus, "Prometheus" does not disappoint you. But it does not satisfy your attention completely either. In trying to find the origin of man, Scott smartly finds the origin of aliens. Humans in the franchise have always been greedy to harness the alien as a weapon. Turns out someone already outdid us. In that sense, the alien is like a metaphor for everything that is bad and greedy in us and our insane desire to play with fire to destroy those like us. "Prometheus" is one of the smartest ways to reboot an old franchise. Not only do you keep the elements that made the first such a success, but you introduce new ones while keeping the audience in the dark about its connection to the old. In that respect, this is a masterstroke by Ridley Scott. Verdict : Smart reboot of a franchise ![]() |

He will make his Hollywood debut with "The Lord of the Rings" producer Barrie Osborne, who hopes to tell an Indian story in Hollywood style. Kamal and Osborne announced their tie-up at the ongoing International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) weekend here. The actor-filmmaker is looking forward to working with Osborne, who he says has worked with "champions of Hollywood". "The world has seen his work. You keep doing hard work but you are not sure if it is good work. It is only after people like Barrie approach you and make you realise," said the 57-year-old. "The lineage that Barrie comes with is close to my heart. All the heroes that I have looked up to have worked with him. He has worked with champions of Hollywood like Cappola (Francis Ford Coppola)," he added. Some of Osborne's notable works include "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King", "The Waterhorse", "The Warrior's Way" and "The Prophet". Osborne hinted that the project with Haasan will be a mix of Indian and western sensibilities. "We plan to tell the story of Indian history and tradition in Hollywood style," he said. The international filmmaker says Kamal is like a cinema encyclopedia. "It was a pleasure to meet Kamal (Haasan) over the years. Recently, he came to Hollywood to do some of his work on his new film 'Vishwaroopam'. I was invited to see the film and I was impressed. "After that we started talking about the idea to work together. It is such an honour to know him because his knowledge of literature and films is like that of an encyclopedia," Osborne said. "We started to talk about the possibility of working together and explore different avenues. Kamal presented an idea to me that I felt was compelling," he added. Asked about the kind of projects they are planning to work upon, Haasan says they are yet to decide upon it. "We are still developing the idea. Its an international movie involving the world. We have just decided that we would work together. As an actor I'll do it, as a writer I'll do it, and if he needs me to direct it, I'll do that also," he said. |

| Great time for actresses in Indian cinema: Priyanka Posted: 09 Jun 2012 05:58 AM PDT Priyanka Chopra admits that Indian cinema remains male- dominated but says changed perspectives towards female actors have helped current times become great times for actresses to work in the industry. "The film industry is male dominated but it's hugely fascinating to see how a change has come about. People's mindset towards actresses is changing so that we can do roles which are beyond playing just being a coy girl. It is a great time for Indian actresses to be in cinema," Priyanka said here Saturday. She spoke at a press conference of her forthcoming film "Teri Meri Kahaani", on the sidelines of the 13th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) weekend and awards. She was accompanied by co-star Shahid Kapoor and director Kunal Kohli. "Teri Meri Kahaani", releasing June 22, is a love story that spans across three eras - 1910, 1960 and 2012. The actress, who won a National award for her performance in "Fashion", said she is proud to have started the trend of women-oriented films. "When 'Fashion' happened, everybody told me it is a big risk, nobody comes to watch women-oriented movies. I feel like I have kickstarted all the gamut of films being made with female-dominated parts," she added. Priyanka revealed her journey so far has been a learning experience. "Nobody can ensure anything in life. You just have to work hard. You just need to take care of the opportunities given to you. I am somebody who came to the film industry without knowing anyone. "It was completely new for me as I started at the age of 17. Everything I have learned is my own. I have fallen, bruised myself so I take a lot of pride in it," she added. |
