Life-Altering Invention of the Day

Posted: 23 May 2012 10:51 AM PDT

It took two months and a whole team of MIT mechanical engineers and nano-technologists, but at long last, mankind has a solution to the ketchup bottle battle.

LiquiGlide, a “super slippery” coating, is made up of nontoxic materials that allow the condiment to pour out smoothly, the way it was intended. The lubricant can be applied to all sorts of food packaging, but ketchup had better be likely will be priority number one.

One of the biggest challenges the team faced was making sure the coating was safe to consume, which meant ingredients had to be FDA-approved. “We had a limited amount of materials to pick from,” said team member Dave Smith, an MIT Ph.D. candidate. “I can’t say what they are, but we’ve patented the hell out of it.”

Social Experiment of the Day

Writer Alyssa Kramer recently created a desperately unattractive — and fake — OkCupid profile for her “white trash” alter ego “Marla.” (Embiggen.)

“The goal was to be as incredibly weird, rude, and unattractive as possible to see if guys would still talk to me,” she said.

Much to Kramer’s horrified amusement, Marla the Lowlife garnered plenty of interest — the attention she received is equal parts disgusting, creepy, and… predictable.

Saying What We’re All Thinking of the Day

Posted: 23 May 2012 09:27 AM PDT

Sarah Burge, who is in the Guinness Book of World Records for undergoing the most plastic surgeries, appeared this week on Anderson Cooper’s show, where the “Human Barbie” told the host about how she was getting her daughter on the same process and encouraging her to pole dance.

Finally, Cooper had had enough, and he gave her the boot:

I honestly have nothing more to talk to you about… I gotta be honest, I gotta just stop. I’m sorry. I try to be really polite to all my guests, but I just think you’re dreadful and I honestly don’t want to talk to you anymore.

Cooper later admitted: “I regret having her on in the first place, and I regret that that’s how things ended.”

Prison Sentence of the Day

 - Prison Sentence of the Day

A Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA locate Osama bin Laden has been convicted of treason and sentenced to 33 years in prison. Held for a year, Shakil Afridi was tried under a set of tribal laws that human rights organizations have criticized for failing to provide due process — people have no rights to legal representation, to present material evidence, or to cross-examine witnesses.

U.S. officials say Afridi helped the CIA by running a hepatitis vaccination program to collect DNA and verify bin Laden’s presence  in Abbottabad. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had hoped to see Afridi freed, saying his work served Pakistani and American interests.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said today that “anyone who helped the United States find bin Laden was working against al-Qaida, and not against Pakistan.”

This development does not bode well for U.S.-Pakistani relations — the two countries currently are engaged in talks over reopening NATO supply routes to U.S.-led troops in Afghanistan.
