Mother’s Day History Lesson of the Day

Posted: 13 May 2012 01:15 PM PDT

 - Mother's Day History Lesson of the Day

According to this post on Bloomberg, Anna M. Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day, wouldn’t be too happy with the way that the holiday is commercialized these days.

The holiday has its roots in the early 1900s, beginning as Mother’s Friendship Day, an act to bring together mothers from opposite sides of the Civil War. Later, after corporate America had began to market it, Jarvis addressed businesses, “You are using a beautiful idea as a means of profiteering. As the founder of Mother’s Day, I demand that it cease.”

With that tone, she had essentially swung a wooden spoon towards the collective backsides of corporations.

Mitt Romney’s Hypocritical Words of the Day

Posted: 13 May 2012 12:00 PM PDT

 - Mitt Romney's Hypocritical Words of the Day

Yesterday, Mitt Romney spoke at the Christian college, Liberty University, where he tried breaking through his Mormon image to become the Evangelical Christian candidate to beat. Pandering to the crowd, he made a couple interesting statements about gay marriage and the state of Christian values in America. To wit:

Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman.

But in the same speech, Romney also said:

Whether the cause is justice for the persecuted, compassion for the needy and the sick, or mercy for the child waiting to be born, there is no greater force for good in the nation than Christian conscience in action.

Of course the “persecuted” in question, sadly, does not include same-sex couples who were denied legal unions in North Carolina, but rather the downtrodden wealthy white males who bully and assault gay teens.

Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day

Posted: 13 May 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Tennessee mother, Lacey Buchanan, shares her story through this heartstring-tugging video she made about her son who was born blind and with a cleft palate. She does expose the less-than-kind words that she’s heard, which seems less than important when it’s countered with the video’s uplifting message.

100th Digital Short of the Day

Posted: 13 May 2012 09:45 AM PDT

While it seems as though Saturday Night Live is losing some of their heavy hitters (and going into the dreaded lull of a rebuilding year), that didn’t stop them from putting together a celebratory milestone clip for their 100th Digital Short, which features the likes of Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Natalie Portman, and Jon Hamm. If this is going to be Andy Samberg’s last hurrah, at least he’s going out with a bang.

Gary Busey’s Mothers Day Tribute of the Day

Posted: 13 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Gary Busey is probably the greatest (and craziest) dude in Hollywood, eclipsing the legend that is Nicholas Cage by leaps and bounds. So a video starring Busey about Mothers Day can ONLY bring joy to the hearts of people who love trainwrecks.

It’s Sundog!

 - It's Sundog!

Nothing can celebrate the person who birthed you into this world by donning some appropriately embarrassing outfit and taking her out to Olive Garden. However, for this pup, he might be better trying to sail on through the day without notice.

Lights Out

Odd Future’s Lil B has certainly made quite the impression on everyone over the last few months, but nothing compares to his video for “3 Stacks,” which features a not-so-obvious Celine Dion sample. Hearts will go on, indeed.

Ghostbusters Parody of the Day

Posted: 12 May 2012 06:45 PM PDT

In something that is both dated, awkward, and just unintentionally hilarious, this Apple-produced video, “Blue Busters,” takes shots at IBM using Ray Parker Jr.’s Ghostbusters as its reference point. Even better are the cameos by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, which put them in the unique position of being innovators of dis videos.

This bicycle manufacturing tutorial film from 1945 was unearthed with a nice vintage feel. The film originally was produced by the British Film Council, which makes it super legit for anglophile bike enthusiasts.

Toddler Terrorist of the Day

Posted: 12 May 2012 03:30 PM PDT

JetBlue, ever the customer-friendly airline, is making waves once again, after it booted an 18-month-old toddler whose name allegedly appeared on a no-fly list. The family believes they were profiled because of their Middle Eastern heritage and the Transportation Security Administration claims that the girl’s name was never flagged. JetBlue offered the generic explanation/non-apology:

We are investigating this particular incident. We believe this was a computer glitch. Our crewmembers followed the appropriate protocols, and we apologize to the family involved in this unfortunate circumstance.
