Say What Now of the Day

 - Say What Now of the Day

In his Equal Time column today, the New York Post‘s Phil Mushnick goes straight racist on the Nets’ new logo as the team transitions from New Jersey to Brooklyn (with a little influence from Jay-Z, who owns 1.5 percent of the team):

As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?

Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!

As Jack Kogod (@Unsilent) posted on Twitter: “Looking forward to not reading Phil Mushnick’s independent blog.”

Celeb Stalker of the Day

Posted: 04 May 2012 10:39 AM PDT

Sarah M., the 16-year-old professional stalker known for her 4,500-strong collection of photos of herself posing with celebs, is officially famous in her own right after a coveted sit-down today with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. Unfortunately, the interview doesn’t shed any light on her last name, or what her dad does for a living to help facilitate so many encounters, so we’ll have to make do with these morsels:

Who was her first celeb pic?

“Robert Hayes. I knew him as the dad from Homeward Bound, of course.”

Why does she do it?

“I was just always really into pop culture. … I wanted to go out there and see it for myself, because I read so much negative stuff about all my favorite people.”

How do you track down all the stars?

“As long as I got straight A’s in school, [my dad] would take me to any event that he possibly could.”

What if her subjects don’t want to be stalked?

“There’s always going to be people who aren’t into it. But I always know the right situation.”

RIP: Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch, at 47

Posted: 04 May 2012 10:12 AM PDT

 - RIP: Adam Yauch, at 48
Adam “MCA” Yauch, who co-founded pioneering hip-hop group the Beastie Boys with Mike “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz in 1979, has died. He was 47.

Yauch had been in treatment for cancer since 2009, when doctors discovered a tumor in his salivary gland.

Earlier this year, Yauch posted this on the band’s website:

Hello My Friends While I'm grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated. I'm continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future.

In addition to the Beastie Boys, Yauch was heavily involved in the Free Tibet movement and co-organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts in the ’90s. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day

 - Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day

In the saddest story you’ll read today, the wife of Capt. Bruce Kevin Clark witnessed his death Monday while the couple were video-chatting via Skype. “At the time of the incident, the family was hoping for a rescue and miracle, but later learned that it was not to be,” said Bradley Taber-Thomas, Clark’s brother-in-law. “Although the circumstances were unimaginable, Bruce’s wife and extended family will be forever thankful that he and his wife were together in his last moments.”

Clark was a U.S. Army nurse stationed in Afghanistan who had been awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service, Medal National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Medal. Clark was described by his commander as “awesome,” “a professional,” and “a great asset, leader, and friend,” and he noted that Clark “made long days and nights a lot shorter.”

Clark is survived by his wife and two daughters, ages 3 and 9. His cause of death is under investigation.

Controversial Marketing Campaign of the Day

Posted: 04 May 2012 09:28 AM PDT

A new Olympic Games ad by Argentina captures Fernando Zylberberg, a star field-hockey player, training for London on the Falkland Islands. “To compete on English soil, we train on Argentine soil,” the spot says.

Problem is, the Falklands are a self-governing British territory over which the two countries have fought forever, and naturally, the Brits are ticked.

“The Olympics is about sport and not politics,” said a spokeswoman for Britain’s Foreign Office. “We are also dismayed at the insensitivity and disrespect demonstrated by the filmmakers in their use of a war memorial in the Falklands as a prop.”

Kanye West has teamed up with fashion’s foremost filmmaker, Ruth Hogben, on the video for “Lost in the World,” the latest single from his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The video, in “breaking the mold of the popular rap aesthetic,” may be just the thing to restore West’s credibility in the fashion world.

Follow-Up of the Day: Junior Seau’s Brain to be Studied

 - Follow-Up of the Day: Junior Seau's Brain To Be Studied

The family of Junior Seau, the NFL great who committed suicide Wednesday, will allow his brain to be studied for evidence of damage as a result of concussions.

“The family was considering this almost from the beginning, but they didn’t want to make any emotional decisions,” San Diego Chargers chaplain Shawn Mitchell said. The family wants “to help other individuals down the road.”

A link between traumatic brain injury and depression has been known for years, and there are similarities between Seau’s death and that of former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson, who committed suicide last year. Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine found that Duerson suffered from a neurodegenerative disease linked to concussions, and that played a role in triggering his depression.
