Bill Maher Calls Out the GOP Vid of the Day

Posted: 21 Apr 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Love him or hate him, there’s no arguing that Bill Maher can certainly get a rise out of people, particularly when it comes to poking holes in political ideology. Last night, he ended Real Time with the keen observation that Republicans are basically waging a war against common sense, but not before taking some pretty good jabs at folks who probably deserve them.

Record Store Day Equipment Guide of the Day

 - Record Store Day Equipment Guide of the Day

It’s Record Store Day — the one day in which all music labels and stores unite to bring the public limited pressings of (probably) overpriced records. Still, it tends to be a date that is often circled many times over in peoples’ calendars and is moving ever so swiftly in becoming the music nerd’s equivalent to Black Friday.

For people just (re)discovering vinyl, this guide to proper equipment might be slightly helpful for playing some of those limited edition singles.

Meat is Murder Story of the Day

 - Meat is Murder Story of the Day

In a story that would please Morrissey to no end, controversy surrounding a children’s book, Vegan is Love, espouses the moral that “hamburgers are violent and sad,” a point further driven by images of dead animals. Now meat-eaters are mad and vegans are feeling marginalized and stereotyped, so America remains unhappy. At least Man vs. Food is still on.

Lights Out

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 07:30 PM PDT

There’s a bit of a May-December, puppet/not-a-puppet romance-type-thing going on in this music video for The Zax‘s “Nothing to Celebrate (Champagne),” directed by Ben & Julia, but who are we to judge?

[thanks, rion!]

Public Transportation of the Day

 - Public Transportation of the Day

Hate walking? There’s an awkward new way of getting around the streets of Toronto: Baxi, the piggyback taxi service.

Baxi driver walker Nick Latimer hangs out in Queen West wearing a pig nose and a pink “Baxi” t-shirt, and will (literally!) pick up passengers for a fee.

The service is a promotional stunt for Latimer’s film, Hogtown, a noir-ish tale of a Baxi-turned-killer.

Here’s the synopsis:

An insomniac who spends his nights piggybacking people in a nightmare of a city known as Hogtown. Carl Gilmour (a.k.a. Baxi) piggybacks a slew of scum bags ranging from the mildly annoying to the armed and dangerous. These “pigs” push Carl to the edge of sanity forcing him to violent, bloody street justice. A vigilante is born. Piggybacker by day, butcher by night.

On second thought, I’ll just take the subway.

Ye Olde Debunking of the Day

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 04:30 PM PDT

TIL: the letter y in “ye olde” was actually printers’ shorthand for the letter “thorn,” pronounced “th.” So, it’s not technically “yee olde” after all — although it’s more fun to say it that way.

If anybody needs me, I’ll be at ye olde apothecary.
