 - RIP: Dick Clark, at 82

Dick Clark, the longtime New Year’s Eve fixture, music industry maverick, TV host, and producer of American Bandstand, died today of a heart attack at 82. Clark suffered a major stroke in 2004 but returned to the airwaves to host seven more New Year’s Rockin’ Eves.

According to the Museum of Broadcast Communications, Dick Clark Productions has turned out more than 7,500 hours of television programming, including more than 30 series and 250 specials, as well as more than 20 movies for theater and TV. His success landed him Emmys, Grammys, induction in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Clark had long been known for his departing catchphrase, “For now, Dick Clark… so long,” delivered with a military salute, and for his youthful appearance that earned him the moniker “America’s Oldest Teenager.”

“If you want to stay young looking,” he once said, “pick your parents very carefully.”

Clark is survived by his third wife, Keri Wigton, and three children.

End Of An Era of the Day

Legendary Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summit announced today that she is stepping down nearly a year after learning she suffers from early onset dementia. Summitt leaves the sport as the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history in 38 seasons in Knoxville, where she will continue to serve as coach emeritus. “I feel really good about my decision,” Summitt said. “I think this is going to be a win-win situation for everybody.

“None of us will ever have the impact Pat Summitt has” on women’s basketball, Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey said. “She’s our John Wooden.” It’s a perfect comparison: Summit’s eight national titles are the most of any coach in the history of women’s basketball and are second all-time to Wooden’s 10 national titles as UCLA’s men’s basketball coach. And like Wooden’s athletes, “Every player who has completed her eligibility either has earned a degree or is on schedule to earn a degree,” says Yahoo! Sports’ Eric Adelson. “Think about that.”

Different Strokes Documentary of the Day

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 11:09 AM PDT

Chris Birch made headlines last fall when he awoke from a stroke to discover he was no longer a straight, engaged-to-a-woman sports addict, but a flaming homosexual who quickly found a boyfriend and a job as a hairdresser. I Woke Up Gay, a new documentary about his, er, queerness, aired in the U.K. last night, and it has fueled the controversy over whether it’s possible to become gay overnight. To no one’s surprise, Chris, now Kris, is constantly confronted by people who aren’t quite sure whether to believe his claim that his stroke “turned” him gay — even his new boyfriend, Jak, is skeptical.

The 57-minute video can be found here.

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day

Salecia Johnson might have thrown the mother of all temper tantrums at a Georgia elementary school last Friday: The 6-year-old allegedly pushed fellow students, threw items off a teacher’s desk, tore material from the walls, tried to bite a doorknob, and tossed a small shelving unit (which struck the school’s principal in the leg). But when a police officer tried to calm Salecia down, she “pulled away and actively began resisting and fighting with me,” reported the cop — so, naturally, he handcuffed her and tossed her in the back of his squad car.

Salecia has since been released to her family — who, naturally, are pissed. The girl’s aunt, Candace Ruff, picked her up at the police station, where Ruff said Salecia was in a holding cell and complained about the steel handcuffs. “She said they were really tight. She said they really hurt her wrists,” Ruff said. “Call the police, is that the first step?”

Police defended the cuff-and-stuff, saying Salecia was “placed in handcuffs for her safety. When a person is put in handcuffs, it’s for their safety, it’s not a punishment.”

Epic Fail of the Day

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 09:00 AM PDT

In a move intended to raise awareness of female genital mutilation, Swedish culture minister Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth this week commissioned a large cake shaped like a black woman, the cutting of which symbolically starting at the clitoris. The “art installation” instead turned into what most consider a “racist spectacle,” says Kitimbwa Sabuni of the National Afro-Swedish Association, and have prompted calls for the culture minister’s dismissal.

Adelsohn Liljeroth defended her actions, saying the anger should be directed at the cake’s artist, not at her, and claiming the situation was “misinterpreted.” “Art needs to be provocative,” she said.
