 - Crime Spree of the Day

William C. Todd left little room for improvement Tuesday in a crime spree that saw him commit 10 felonies in nine hours during a bus layover in Nashville. The lengthy list includes carjacking, arson, and robbery at knifepoint. In fact, Todd enjoyed robbery at knifepoint so much that he repeated it to end his day. He was apprehended while attempting to hide, submerged in a water-cooling vat in Opryland.

 - Follow-Up of the Day: George Zimmerman To Be Charged in Death of Trayvon Martin

Florida Special Prosecutor Angela Corey plans to charge George Zimmerman in the February 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Corey will announce the charges at a press conference this afternoon. A charge of first-degree murder has been ruled out because a grand jury won’t be empaneled, in accordance with Florida law. Zimmerman’s whereabouts remain a mystery, though his former lawyers confirmed Tuesday that he is still in the U.S.

Titanic Canines of the Day

As we near the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, enough about the fates of the human passengers! A baby Pomeranian named Lady was one of three dogs to survive the sinking of the Titanic, out of 12 canines on board. Owned by Margaret Hays, Lady survived the sinking because crew members allowed Hays to get in a lifeboat with the blanket-wrapped puppy. “Because they assumed it was a baby, it survived,” said J. Joseph Edgette, who produced and curated a new exhibit on the tragedy at Widener University.

In joining Twitter late Tuesday, Betty White has officially cemented her place in pop culture history. While clearly timed to promote her new NBC show (Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, which premieres tonight), White is a most welcome addition to the Twitterverse: “Hey @RyanSeacrest — my new show airs tomorrow and I hear we’re in the same time slot. I’ve always dreamed of sharing a night with you…”

Controversial Marketing Campaign of the Day

 - Controversial Marketing Campaign of the Day

In a campaign blatantly directed at male fans, the Amsterdam arm of Stüssy has created a Facebook page whose model strips off her clothes as the page receives more and more Likes. Talk about incentive.

“As you can imagine, the model must be suffocating under that many layers of clothing,” said Colin Lamberton, creative director for Arnold Amsterdam, the agency behind the ad. “It is almost a public duty to free her out of this misery, so we are expecting Facebook fans to help out here. Like and undress.”

What’s Facebook’s position? The company’s guidelines read, “You must not use Facebook features or functionality, such as the Like button, as a voting mechanism for a promotion.”

The Dutch page’s fan-following stands at just more than 360 — though undoubtedly not for long.

When Canadian Broadcasting Company reporters Steven D’Souza and Nisha Patel decided to tie the knot, their Toronto news station dispatched reporters all over town for “special coverage” that rivaled only the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Movie Trailer of the Day

Bekoji, a rural town in Ethiopia, is home to eight(!) Olympic runners, including Tirunesh Dibaba, who took gold in the 10,000 and 5,000 metre races in Beijing in 2008. Behind their success is beloved long distance coach Sentayehu Eshetu, a central figure in a new documentary, Town of Runners, that follows three young athletes on their own quests for greatness. “Nearby villages think we’re mad,” Eshetu says.

“A lot of people say Bekoji’s success is down to genetics or the altitude,” director Jerry Rothwell says, “but that doesn’t explain why the town 5 miles down the road doesn’t also produce world-class long distance runners!”

The film debuts at the Tribeca Film Festival this month.

Furniture Inspiration of the Day

 - Furniture Inspiration of the Day

Designer Maarten De Celaer borrowed from science in creating his Mutation Series, whose pieces resemble cell transformations “that have germinated into upholstered mutations because of a chemical or nuclear reaction. Perhaps it’s a virus or bacteria that has grown dramatically out of scale.” The pieces are made by composing patterns with parts of foam spheres that are applied to basic structures. Then the pieces are coated with a rubber or velvet-like finish.

De Celaer’s series is featured at this year’s Milan Design Week.
