- Canadian Currency Cancellation of the Day

After 104 years and 35 billion pennies, The Royal Canadian Mint will stop producing the 1-cent coin this month. “It costs taxpayers a penny-and-a-half every time we make one,” Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said. The Harper government says it’s leaving it to businesses to work out for themselves how to round off cash transactions to the nearest five-cent increment.

Invisible Children, the nonprofit that created the controversial Internet sensation KONY 2012, has announced plans to release a sequel to the original film later this week. Part II will refocus attention back to the conflict in Africa, and also will defend the organization’s message and methods, which came under criticism after KONY 2012 went viral.

New Burger King Menu of the Day

Burger King launches a revamped menu today that includes smoothies, frappes, and snack wraps. In addition to menu changes (including a single, thicker slice of cheese on the Whopper!), the burger chain will spend $750 million over the next year on marketing, operations, and the look of its stores. “Everything is focused on getting to be No. 1,” says Steve Wiborg, executive vice president and president of North American operations.

In case you missed it, The History Press has launched a Twitter feed @TitanicRealTime that tracks the Titanic’s progress “as if from on board the ship itself,” en route to its fate with a surly iceberg and, subsequently, the bottom of the Atlantic. The feed commemorates the 100th anniversary on April 15 of the doomed ocean liner’s only voyage. Worth a follow, even though we all know how it ends.
