Lifted Lorax Statue of the Day

 - Lifted Lorax Statue of the Day

A bronze statue of one of Dr. Seuss’s iconic characters, The Lorax, was stolen from the home of Seuss’s widow, Audrey Geisel over the weekend.

Geisel noticed the two-foot sculpture and its tree-stump base sometime were missing on Monday. The property manager says he found footprints that indicated the 300-pound Lorax had been dragged to an access road and lifted over a fence.

Police say it’s unclear whether the statue was stolen due to the popularity of the character — who is currently enjoying a big-screen revival — or just the value of the bronze itself.

Investigators have not commented on whether they intend to interview the Old Once-ler on the subject of why the Lorax was lifted and taken somewhere.

Cooked Book of the Day

 - Cooked Book of the Day

The Real Cookbook, designed by German firm Korefe and published by Gerstenberg Publishing, is a special edition collection of recipes imprinted on fresh pasta, which can be filled with ingredients and baked into a classic lasagne — recipe included, presumably.

Hopefully there was a taste test before publication, so the authors had a chance to literally eat their words.

Poop-Powered Vehicle of the Day

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:15 PM PDT

The Denver Zoo has introduced a new motorized rickshaw called a tuk tuk, imported from Thailand. That wouldn’t necessarily be news, except for the novel fuel system they’re using to power it: animal feces.

The zoo’s new “Tour de Tuk Tuk” lets visitors ride around on the world’s first-ever motorized rickshaw powered by elephant poop and concession stand trash.

The zoo doesn’t plan to stop with just the vehicle, either. They want to use the tuk tuk’s patent-pending gasification system to power a new 10-acre elephant exhibit opening this spring.

Prior to launching the rickshaw, Denver Zoo staffers tested their poop-powered energy technology on something smaller: a blender used to mix margaritas at a zoo event. We can only assume they tasted a lot better than they smelled.

Hoodie News of the Day

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 10:25 AM PDT

Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) was ordered to leave the House floor this morning after he removed his suit jacket to reveal a hoodie while addressing the chamber on the issue of racial profiling in the wake of the Trayvon Martin case.

Rush, with hood up, said, “Just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum,” referring to notorious hoodie-wearer Geraldo Rivera’s controversial remarks about Trayvon.

Republican speaker pro tem Gregg Harper (R-MS), cut Rush off and ordered him to lower his hood or leave the chamber, finding him in violation of a rule that bans the wearing of hats on the House floor.

In other hoodie news, the National Rifle Association has taken advantage of the media firestorm around the sweatshirts to add a new “Concealed Carry Hoodie” — “ideal for carrying your favorite compact to mid-size pistol” — to the official NRA Store.
