Dancing Cows of the Day

Compassion in World Farming, a UK-based nonprofit dedicated to farm animal welfare, recently visited a British farm to watch cows returning to their pasture for spring and summer grazing after a long winter spent cooped up indoors.

Looks like the people of Great Britain are about to be treated to some really great cheese.

Hate Crime Investigation of the Day

 - Hate Crime Investigation of the Day

Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old mother of five who emigrated from Iraq with her husband 17 years ago, was found severely beaten inside her El Cajon, California home next to a note that allegedly read “go back to your own country. You’re a terrorist.”

Alawadi was rushed to the hospital, but passed away after being taken off life support yesterday afternoon.

One of her three daughters, Fatima Al Himidi, told KUSI she found Alawadi unconscious in the dining room. The attacker had apparently broken in through the sliding glass door and assaulted Alawadi repeatedly with a tire iron. Al Himidi said the attacker was gone by the time she came downstairs.

According to Lt. Mark Coit of the El Cajon police, the family had received a note similar to the one left near Alawadi earlier this month, but thought it was a prank, so did not bother reporting it to authorities.

“Given the fact of these notes left, we're obviously concerned about the possibility of a hate crime,” said the executive director of CAIR’s San Diego branch, Hanif Mohebi. “I don't think anyone would disagree this is a coldblooded murder.”

Investigators say they believe this was “an isolated incident,” and a hate crime is just “one of the possibilities” they are exploring.

Someone Needs A Hug of the Day

 - Someone Needs A Hug of the Day

A middle school in New Jersey has come under fire for banning hugging among students.

According to a CBS New York report, Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School Principal Tyler Blackmore made an announcement last week following “incidents of unsuitable, physical interactions” reminding students that Matawan-Aberdeen was a “no hugging school.”

Students say they risk detention if caught embracing.

School Superintendent David Healy commended Blackmore for acting responsibly, saying the students needed to learn about “appropriate interactions.” Still, he said the announcement was being blown out of proportion and students caught hugging would not be suspended.

“It’s stupid, I’ve never heard of such a thing,” said one parent. “Why can’t you hug? That’s how we grew up, with affection.”

Seriously, what’s next? Banning best friends? Oh, wait.

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day

 - This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day

Miss Universe Canada announced yesterday that 23-year-old finalist Jenna Talackova of Vancouver was disqualified from the Donald Trump-owned beauty pageant, but didn’t provide a reason.

“She did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form,” competition officials said in a statement. Talackova, however, says she knows exactly why she was disqualified: She was born with male genitalia.

The 6’1″ bombshell underwent sexual reassignment surgery in 2010 after living most of her life as a woman.

She wouldn’t speak with the press concerning the unceremonious scrubbing of her profile from the Miss Universe Canada website, but did take to Twitter to bemoan being “disqualified for being born.”

Many have noted that Miss Universe Canada’s only expressed requirements are that the contestant be a Canadian citizen and between the ages of 18 and 27. Nary a mention of gender confirmation surgery as being grounds for dismissal.

On Twitter, Talackova implied that she’s down but not through. “I'm disqualified, however I'm not giving up,” she tweeted. “I'm not going to just let them disqualify me over discrimination.”
