Badvertising of the Day

 - Badvertising of the Day

Looks like the folks at Belvedere Vodka have been getting high on their own supply. How else would one explain this awful, rape-appropriating ad they just released on Facebook?

The sobering responses to the copy from distraught vodka drinkers helped the LVMH brand quickly come to and pull the ad. “We apologize to any of our fans who were offended by our recent tweet,” Belvedere wrote. “We continue to be an advocate of safe and responsible drinking.”

Can’t wait for their next tweet wherein they tell anyone who still has a problem with the ad to go have a drink.

Irresponsible Response of the Day

 - Irresponsible Response of the Day

Asked at a press conference today in Louisiana about the persistent belief among many Americans that President Obama is a Muslim, Newt Gingrich said he personally takes the commander-in-chief “at his word” concerning his Christianity, but understands why some do not.

“Why does the president behave the way that people would think that [he’s Muslim]?” Gingrich told reporters. “You have to ask, why would they believe that? It’s not cause they’re stupid. It’s because they watch the kind of things I just described to you.”

According to Politico, those “things” included the president’s “excessive sensitivity” toward non-Judeo-Christian faiths. Gingrich has also accused the Obama administration of “anti-religious bigotry” and slammed the president for “apologizing” to Muslims.

“The fact is I take him at his word,” Gingrich is quoted as saying, “but I think it is very bizarre that he is desperately concerned to apologize to Muslim religious fanatics while they are killing young Americans while at the same time going to war against the Catholic Church and against every right to live Protestant organization in the country. I just think it’s a very strange value system.”

Maggie Haberman notes that, in a radio interview yesterday, Gingrich admonished the media for “going easy on coverage of Obama’s ‘Muslim friends’.”

A short while ago, LeBron James tweeted this photo of him and his Miami Heat teammates wearing hoodies in solidarity with Trayvon Martin’s family and friends.

According to the Palm Beach Post‘s Heat Zone, James is the one who organized the photo and made it happen.

Earlier today, Dwyane Wade also tweeted a photo of himself in a hoodie along with the hashtag #trayvonmartin.

Stay Classy of the Day

At a police gun range in Louisiana today, Rick Santorum was showing off his shooting skills with a Colt M1911 when an AP cameraman, as well as several other reporters, overheard a woman in attendance advising the GOP presidential candidate to improve his aim by “pretend[ing] it’s Obama.” (Can be heard at around 0:36 in the video above.)

Asked later if he heard the remark, Santorum said he did not. “It’s a very terrible and horrible remark and I’m glad I didn’t hear it,” he told AP. A Secret Service spokesman said the woman’s identity and intent were being investigated.

Lucky Lizard of the Day

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 10:45 AM PDT

 - Lucky Lizard of the Day
London teacher Lizzie Griffiths, 25, has decided to spend her life savings on chemotherapy for her beloved bearded dragon, George, whom she adopted from a rescue center a year ago.

After nursing George back to health from a chest infection, Griffiths spotted a tumor on the little lizard’s face, and found out he had developed cancer. Following two unsuccessful surgeries to remove the tumor, chemotherapy was the only option left to save George, who is the first bearded dragon in the UK to undergo the treatment.

Griffiths spent the $4,750 that she and her fiancĂ© had been saving for their wedding on the reptile’s medical bills, and she drives 200 miles each day to see her pet at the treatment center.

“I think it’s adorable and I understand he is her number one. I don’t know anyone who could love George as much as Lizzie does,” said her fiancĂ©, Chris Fisher.

Doctors said this weekend that it looks like the chemotherapy is working, and George is beginning to recover.

Racism Response of the Day

Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch came under fire yesterday after a screenshot showing “N***er Brown Pants” for sale on a supposed A&F outlet website made the rounds of the web.

Although the company has certainly caused its share of controversy in the past, counterfeiters appear to be at fault for this latest incident. The website featuring the racist slur was a phony, reportedly registered to a Hong Kong email address.

“We do not condone racist language. This is a counterfeit website and we have initiated legal proceedings to shut it down,” an Abercrombie spokesperson told TMZ.

The fake site, abercrombie-and-fitchoutlet.com, now appears to be offline.

Gawker notes that the counterfeiters’ use of the n-word was likely due to shoddy Chinese-to-English translation software, which has been slipping the slur onto product labels since at least 2007.

President Obama Speaks Out On Trayvon Martin of the Day

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 07:48 AM PDT

In stark contrast to Geraldo Rivera’s stunningly callous victim-blaming, President Obama this morning delivered a powerful statement of support for Trayvon Martin’s parents in response to a question about the ongoing investigation.

“When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids,” the president said. “I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this… You know, if I had a son he’d look like Trayvon.”

Say What Now of the Day

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 07:34 AM PDT

On this morning’s Fox and Friends, talk show host Geraldo Rivera blamed Trayvon Martin’s shooting on his attire, saying his hoodie was as much responsible for his death as George Zimmerman was.

“I am urging the parents of black and Latino particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies,” Rivera told his unfazed Fox News colleagues.

He went on to claim that the hoodie bears negative connotations that cannot be “rehabilitated.”

“I bet you money,” said Rivera, upping the audacity ante, “[I]f [Martin] didn’t have that hoodie on that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldn’t have responded in that violent and aggressive way.”
