This Is Fabulous, You Should Watch It of the Day

Posted: 20 Mar 2012 01:14 PM PDT

Drag queens Detox, Vicky Vox, and DQ’d Drag Race contestant Willam Belli pay a tongue-in-chicken ode to pro-anti-gay restaurant chain Chick-fil-A with an “endorsement” video set to Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On.”

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly‘s PopWatch, Belli says she recently learned about the company’s ties to anti-gay groups and decided to write the song after getting diarrhea from eating at a Chick-fil-A.

“The fact that they come after gay people, let me come for you,” Belli said. “The worst endorsement for a Christian chicken eatery is three drag queens.”

First World Problem of the Day

 - First World Problem of the Day

First World Problem of the Day: A widespread shortage of popular toast spread Marmite has sent New Zealanders scurrying to find the last remaining containers in a bout of frenzy nicknamed by the press “Marmageddon.”

Sanitarium, the snack’s manufacturer, was forced to shut down Marmite production last year after its factory in Christchurch was damaged in the earthquake and deemed unsafe.

Since then, supplies have dwindled, and are expected to officially run out next week. Kiwis are reportedly panic-buying the stuff by the crate-load, and exploiters are turning to online auction sites to sell jars at prices hundreds of times the MSRP.

New Zealand prime minister John Key, concerned over the prospect of emptying out his private stash, angered some when he said the shortage may force him to turn to Vegemite, considered by many to be an “inferior” Australian alternative.

Sanitarium, meanwhile, hopes to have production up and running again by July.

Porn Star Prom Date of the Day

Porn Star Prom Date of the Day

Like a lot of teenagers, Mike Stone just wants to spend his senior prom with a bunch of his friends. And a porn star.

A month ago, Stone turned to Twitter in his quest to land an adult actress as his date to the dance, and after over 600 tweets, he may have finally found the lucky lady: Megan Piper.

“If you can get me there, then yes,” the porn starlet tweeted.

Flying Piper from L.A. to Oakdale, MN isn’t exactly in Stone’s 18-year-old budget, and he hasn’t told his parents about his bold scheme, so he’s decided to raise the funds via Twitter, with a little help from his new prom date.

“I’d love to go to prom with @madmike42948 and I think you all should help him raise funds to get me there,” Piper told her Twitter followers.

Whether he succeeds or not, Stone’s scheme has already earned him a sufficient measure of  respect from his friends.

“I was actually thanking people who are cheering me on and telling me to keep on with it. They keep telling me I'm a legend and a hero,” he told The Daily Dot.

Looking For Amelia of the Day [UPDATED]

Posted: 20 Mar 2012 10:18 AM PDT

 - Looking For Amelia of the Day

The search for Amelia Earhart is back on thanks to the State Department and $500k in private funds.

Kicked off at a State Department event celebrating “Amelia Earhart and the United States' ties to our Pacific neighbors,” the search for the aviation pioneer, who disappeared 75 years ago over the South Pacific, will focus on the theory that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, landed in the vicinity of the Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro, formerly known as Gardner Island.

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton is scheduled to meet today with members of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery — the group leading the new search, which will begin in earnest this July to coincide with the anniversary of Earhart and Noonan’s fateful flight.

Follow Up of the Day: FBI, DOJ to Investigate Trayvon Martin Shooting

 - Follow Up of the Day: FBI, DOJ to Investigate Trayvon Martin Shooting

A few hours after press secretary Jay Carney told reporters the White House is “not going to wade into a local law-enforcement matter,” the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice and the FBI both announced that they will yield to requests to investigate the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

“The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation,” said the DOJ in a statement.

Despite moving forward with the investigation, the Justice Department sought in the same statement to temper expectations: “With all federal civil rights crimes, the government must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a person acted intentionally and with the specific intent to do something which the law forbids — the highest level of intent in criminal law.”

One of the major impediments to an open-and-shut manslaughter case against Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, is Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which permits residents to “meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm.”

Zimmerman told police that Martin attacked him from behind as he was walking back towards his truck, and it was fear for his life that prompted him to fire his Kel Tec 9mm handgun.

In addition to the DOJ and the FBI, Florida’s state attorney, Norm Wolfinger, announced this morning that a grand jury will be called to investigate the case. “I share in the desire of the family and the community to accurately collect and evaluate all the facts surrounding the tragic death of Trayvon Martin,” said Wolfinger in a press release. The grand jury will convene on April 10th.

Also this morning, ABC News revealed that Martin was on the phone with a female friend moments before he was shot by Zimmerman. The 16-year-old girl spoke with Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump, and recalled their final conversation.

“He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man,” the unidentified girl is quoted as saying. “I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run but he said he was not going to run.”

The last thing she remembers is Martin trying to escape by running, but being cornered by Zimmerman who asked him what he was doing there. “Next thing I hear is somebody pushing, and somebody pushed Trayvon because the head set just fell,” she said. “I called him again and he didn’t answer the phone.”

In an effort to drive home the racial motivation behind Zimmerman’s actions, Touré pointed to the self-appointed neighborhood watch captain’s 911 call, where, at 2:21, it sounds as though Zimmerman is whispering “f*ckin’ coons.” After listening to Zimmerman’s exchange with the emergency dispatcher, New York Times columnist Nick Kristof said he found “shades of 1950′s Mississippi” in the tape.

Humorous Juxtaposition of the Day

 - Humorous Juxtaposition of the Day

A photo placement gaffe involving the leader of Alberta’s conservative Wildrose Party left campaign coordinators searching for someone to throw under the bus.

The party’s new campaign bus, unveiled yesterday in Edmonton, featured a photo of party leader Danielle Smith awkwardly placed just above the wheels.

Wildrose candidate Shannon Stubbs called the placement “an oversight,” and Smith herself took to Twitter to acknowledge to need for “a couple of changes” to the bus’s facade.

“Albertans are going to want to talk about the challenges of the province, rather than pictures on the side of a campaign bus,” said Stubbs. Can’t Albertans talk about both?
