Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 12:39 PM PST

Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day: Last December, Barbara Bagley, her husband Brad Vom Baur, and their two Shetland sheepdogs Delaney and Dooley were involved in a single-vehicle accident off Interstate 80 near Battle Mountain, Nevada.

Delaney died instantly, and Vom Baur was critically wounded. Bagley suffered a concussion, broken bones, and punctured lungs, but survived. Dooley’s condition, however, was unknown.

The sheltie had run away from the scene of the crash, disappearing without a trace.

After she regained strength enough to begin a proper search, Bagley helped organize a volunteer party to comb northeastern Nevada for her beloved pet.

On January 6th, Bagley received word that dog remains were spotted near the crash site. Later that day, her husband succumbed to his injuries.

“It was a horrible day for me,” Bagley said. “But something inside me told me Dooley was still alive out there. I wasn’t 100% sure, but I didn’t grieve for Dooley like I did for my husband and our other dog.”

She was right: After 53 days in the wilderness, Dooley was found.

The resourceful pooch had sustained himself on roadkill and whatever water he could unearth. He lost 24 pounds, and had a bird bone stuck in his throat, but was otherwise okay.

“I was overjoyed that I was going to have him back in my life,” Bagley said. ” I think he felt the same about me.”

She reports that Dooley is now well on the road to recovering his lost weight, and is slowly but surely getting back to his normal routine.

Bagley credits Dooley with providing her with the “physical and mental affection” she needs to recover from her tremendous loss. ”I owe him so much for the hope I have now and the renewed faith I have in prayer,” she says. “Dogs are so great because of their unconditional love.”

Breaking Bad IRL of the Day

Breaking Bad IRL of the Day

Breaking Bad IRL of the Day: A fire at a nursing home in Ohio that claimed the life of one person and left several others injured was caused by a meth lab explosion according to local authorities.

The lab was reportedly set up inside the room of a resident at the Park Haven Nursing Home in Ashtabula.

The lone fatality, 31-year-old Shaun Warrens, was not a patient or an employee. Three residents and two non-residents were also hospitalized, but their condition was not released.

It remained unclear how long the meth lab had been operating inside the home, and who had known about its existence, but police say their belief is that at least two visitors and one resident were aware of it.

Park Haven had previously been cited for multiple violations stemming from inadequate care.

“It’s created quite a stir, and rightfully so,” Lt. William Parkomaki of the Ashtabula PD said. “The methamphetamine problem is a very, very big problem, not only in our county and our community, but in communities and counties across the country.”

Thing-A-Day of the Day

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 10:02 AM PST

Thing-A-Day of the Day: Greg Tung has just completed his self-inflicted Scare Yourself Every Day challenge — wherein he follows Eleanor Roosevelt’s advice and does one thing every day that scares him — and marked the special occasion by posting this compilation of his more memorable accomplishments.

“There's so much satisfaction from confronting your fears,” Tung wrote at the conclusion of the challenge. “It's something you have to experience for yourself. It makes you think anything is possible. When you do a scary thing, you discover you're stronger than you thought. Much stronger. And those scary things? They're almost never as bad you think. Except if you get colon hydrotherapy. Then it's much much worse.”

Hero Mom of the Day

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 09:16 AM PST

Hero Mom of the Day: Mother of two Stephanie Decker is being hailed as a hero after she managed to shield her children from harm during last week’s record-setting tornado outbreak.

Sadly, Decker, a resident of the devastated town of Henryville, Indiana, did not escape injury: Both of her legs were badly damaged by falling debris and had to be amputated.

“I assumed I was safe and I heard the roar like a train, and I heard it behind me, and I knew it was coming,” she said, reliving her harrowing ordeal from a hospital bed in Louisville. “And it was so loud that I knew that I needed to do something different. I knew staying put wasn’t going to work.”

She scrambled to protect her son and daughter, 8-year-old Dominic and 5-year-old Reese, who were hunkered down in the basement. Decker covered them with a comforter and used her own body as a shield against the disintegrating house.

Just then, the ceiling caved in and her legs were crushed.

Dominic, who, like his sister, was unhurt thanks to his mom, ran for help. Decker was eventually removed from her flattened home and brought to the hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.

Angry Bird of the Day

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 08:51 AM PST

Angry Bird of the Day: A jive turkey nicknamed Godzilla has been terrorizing 69-year-old Edna Geisler of Commerce Township, Michigan, for the past two months.

According to Geisler, the wild bird shows up every day at 7 AM, and returns to his flock in the woods 12 hours later.

Wildlife supervisor Tim Payne says Geisler gave Godzilla the upper hand by showing fear. “Make some runs at the bird and become the aggressor,” he tells her. “The bird needs to learn who’s the boss.”

Damn right.
