I, For One, Etc. of the Day

Posted: 05 Mar 2012 12:34 PM PST

I, For One, Etc. of the Day: In July of last year, University of Cumbria researcher Volker B. Deecke recorded the first definitive instance of a brown bear using a tool.

According to Deecke’s subsequent research paper on “tool-use in the brown bear,” the ursus arctos used a barnacle-covered rock to “exfoliate.”

New Scientist points out that a team of researchers from the Norwegian Polar Institute claimed in the early 70′s to have evidence of a polar bear clubbing a seal with a chunk of ice, but the incident went unwitnessed, and has yet to be repeated.

Tl;dr: We’re f*cked.

Escaped Penguin of the Day

Escaped Penguin of the Day

Escaped Penguin of the Day: Residents of Tokyo have been asked to keep an eye out for a runaway penguin last seen swimming in the mouth of the Kyu-Edo River.

The Humboldt penguin reportedly escaped from Tokyo Sea Life Park by scaling the walls of its enclosure. According to park officials, the penguin’s “tremendous speed” is making recapture difficult.

How exactly the penguin managed to get out remains unclear.

“Sometimes wildlife have an 'explosive' power when frightened by something,” said zoo official Takashi Sugino. “Maybe it ran up the rock after being surprised.”

Darwin Award Winner of the Day

Darwin Award Winner of the Day: A man in Sri Lanka passed away Saturday while attempting to set a world record for longest time spent buried alive.

Doctors said a cause of death had yet to be determined.

24-year-old Janaka Basnayake was helped by family and friends into a 10-foot-deep tench, which was then sealed up with wood and soil. When he was exhumed nearly 7 hours later, he was already unconscious.

Basnayake was brought to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s mother told a local newspaper that her son loved pulling unusual stunts, and had been previously buried underground for two- and six-hour stints.

Debunked Myth of the Day

Debunked Myth of the Day: So, was Ice Cube’s “good day” Jan. 20th, 1992, as Donovan Strain’s research indicates, or Nov. 30th, 1988, as a rival theory suggests? If you ask the man himself, he’ll say both. And neither.

Moviefone recently spoke with the Are We There Yet? star about the Internet’s exhaustive analysis of his 1993 hit single, hoping to learn the truth about the enigmatic date.

Sadly, Ice Cube put the chill on both guesses, saying, “I think I had a good day on both of those days,” and shooting down speculation that he was rapping about a specific day.

“It’s a fictional song,” Mr. Cube said. ”It’s basically my interpretation of what a great day would be. Do you know what I’m saying? So, you know, it’s a little of this and a little of that. I don’t think you can pinpoint the day.”

So, wait — does that mean there never was a Goodyear blimp that read “Ice Cube’s a pimp”? My entire life has been predicated on a lie.

Follow Up of the Day: Fluke Rejects Limbaugh Apology As More Advertisers Bail

Follow Up of the Day: Fluke Rejects Limbaugh Apology As More Advertisers Bail

Follow Up of the Day: The Georgetown University law school student attacked by Rush Limbaugh for seeking to testify before congress on the subject of contraception responded today to the radio host’s statement of apology released over the weekend.

“I don’t think that a statement like this, issued saying that his choice of words was not the best, changes anything,” she told the ladies on The View. “Especially when that statement is issued when he’s under significant pressure from his sponsors, who have begun to pull support from his show.”

Limbaugh’s “sincere” statement similarly failed to persuade his sponsors, several of whom have joined the advertiser exodus that began last week. At least nine companies have pulled their spots from Limbaugh’s syndicated radio program.

AOL this morning issued its own statement, saying it would be suspending its advertising in light of Limbaugh’s comments, which “are not in line with our values.”

Limbaugh has been sharply criticized by members of both parties for calling Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute,” in addition to demanding that she produce a sex tape for his enjoyment.

The loss of ad revenue does not seem to be impacting Limbaugh’s rhetoric. On Monday’s show, the audacious self-proclaimed absurdist blamed the “inappropriate” insults he directed at Fluke on the left, saying he “descended to their level” against his own instincts.

Speaking out about the advertisers who have terminated their relationship with his show, Limbaugh said “they decided they don’t want you or your business anymore.”

Words Of Wisdom of the Day

Posted: 05 Mar 2012 09:37 AM PST

Words Of Wisdom of the Day: Neil DeGrasse Tyson responds to the question “What is the most astounding fact you can share with us about the Universe?”

Money: “When I look up at the night sky, and I know that, yes, we are part of this Universe, we are in this Universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the Universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up — many people feel small, ’cause they’re small and the Universe is big, but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars.”

Music: “To Build a Home” by The Cinematic Orchestra.
