Say What Now of the Day

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 01:39 PM PST

Say What Now of the Day: Rabble-rousing radio host Rush Limbaugh today went all-in with his ongoing ad hominem attacks against the Georgetown student prevented from testifying at the congressional committee hearing on contraception, telling her “and the rest of you Feminazis” that he wants to see videos of them engaging in sexual intercourse posted online.

After calling Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” for wanting to “be paid to have sex,” Limbaugh today demanded “something” in return for “pay[ing] for your contraceptives, and thus pay[ing] for you to have sex.”

That “something,” Limbaugh went on, was for Fluke and other “Feminazis” to “post the videos online so we can all watch.”

Fluke was slated to testify about a gay friend with polycystic ovarian syndrome who needed contraception for medical reasons and couldn’t afford to pay for it out of pocket, which led to serious complications.

The Democratic members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee penned a letter to chairman Darrell Issa, who rejected Fluke’s testimony and proceeded with an all-male panel, urging him to condemn Limbaugh’s comments.

Too Cruel For School of the Day

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 01:18 PM PST

Too Cruel For School of the Day: Bullying of gay teens at high schools across the country is a serious problem. But what do you do when the biggest anti-gay bully at the school is the principal?

Dorothy Bond, head of Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tennessee, has stirred controversy in her community for allegedly telling gay students at the school they are going to hell.

According to multiple students who were in attendance at a school assembly on February 9th, the principal threatened students displaying same-sex affection in public with a 60-day suspensions or even expulsion.

This is not the first time Bond has been accused of making derogatory remarks aimed at gay students. She also reportedly threatened to discipline students who did not bow their heads in prayer, and told pregnant students their “life is over.”

The district has yet to comment on whether Bond would reprimanded for her alleged comments.

Follow Up of the Day: RIP Reply Girls?

Follow Up of the Day: RIP Reply Girls?

Follow Up of the Day: It seems Megan Lee Heart and the rest of the so-called “Reply Girls” may be donezo after petitions to remove their spammy, scammy reply videos have compelled YouTube to rejigger its algorithm to prevent their system from being gamed.

The rampant boobtraps have been the subject of controversy for some time, as YouTube users grew increasingly tired of seeing insipid, cleavage-centric “replies” leech tags and views off popular videos for the sake of monetary gain.

YouTube manager Bing Chen took to Twitter this morning to say those sort of videos are being treated as spam, and engineers are working on “attacking this from several angles.”

Concurrent to the top-down victory, YouTube users also celebrated the announcement that Heart had lost her network partnership with Machinima, and that YouTuber “Thereplygirl” — the Mother of All Reply Girls — has decided to voluntarily give up being a hustler.

However, while thereplygirl claims she will begin producing original content in lieu of low-cut nonsense, Heart remains defiant, saying she is in the process of signing a new partnership contract that will allow her to resume décolletaging for dollars.

And YouTube’s algorithm solution is still in the works, and its effectiveness remains to be seen.

So, in the meantime, just don’t click on those stupid videos.

Another Movie Trailer of the Day

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 12:05 PM PST

Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, and Leighton Meester make a mess and then f*ck it in That’s My Boy — a filthy Father’s Day romp helmed by Hot Tub Time Machine director Sean Anders and penned by Happy Endings creator David Caspe (with rewrites by David Wain and Ken Marino).

The trailer above says it’s for mature audiences only, but you’re going to need to have a mighty immature sense of humor to enjoy it.

End Of An Era of the Day

End Of An Era of the Day

As of this morning, the infamous definition of the word “Santorum” is no longer the top search result on Google.

Spreading Santorum, the website that helped popularize Dan Savage’s alternative meaning, was stripped of its top search result status two nights ago. It was replaced for a time by the markedly filthier Urban Dictionary definition (which even grossed Savage out), but now that too appears to have been moved down (at the time of writing, it is in the number three spot).

SearchEngineLand took a wonky look at what exactly happened, and came back with a pretty troubling response.

It seems Google has been working behind the scenes to implement new SafeSearch features that are left on even when you’ve turned SafeSearch off. One of these features prevents “adult” results from showing up when Google has deemed them irrelevant to the search.

In other words, if you’ve searched “Santorum,” Google “assumes” you’re not looking for frothy fecaled lube, but for the presidential candidate.

Another newly implemented feature aims to return “official sites” as the most relevant search result, and Google again “assumes” that Spreading Santorum is not Rick Santorum’s official site.

So, no more Google Problem for Rick, but an even bigger Google Problem for the rest of us. Fair trade?

Blunt Amendment News of the Day

Blunt Amendment News of the Day

The Senate voted today to reject legislation authored by Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) that aimed to offset President Obama’s health care mandate requiring employers to provide contraception coverage to female employees.

The legislation would have given employers the right to refuse any medical coverage they were religiously or morally opposed to.

Lawmakers in the Democrat-led Senate tabled the Blunt amendment along party lines, with 48 voting in favor, and 51 voting against. Outgoing Republican Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) joined Democrats in defeating the transportation bill amendment.

The junior Senator from Maine, Susan Collins, did not side with her colleague out of concern that self-insured health plans of faith-based organizations would not be allowed an exemption from the mandate.

“This issue will not go away unless the administration takes it away by giving people of faith those First Amendment protections” to refuse coverage on religious grounds, said Sen. Blunt.

Democrats objected to providing employers with the say-so on their employees’ birth control use.

“Imagine that, your boss will decide whether you're acting morally,” Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) said before the vote. “It's appalling we're having this debate in the 21st century.”
