The Artist, Hugo in tie with five Oscars each

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 02:44 AM PST

French silent film "The Artist" and period film "Hugo" became the big winners at the star-studded 84th Academy Awards ceremony here as they walked away with five honours each. "The Artist" was named the best picture and also won the best actor and best director's trophy for Jean Dujardin and Michel Hazanavicius respectively.

"The Artist", a black and white film about a silent movie star who fears his downfall after the arrival of talkies, also won in the best costume and best original score categories. The movie is said to be the second silent film to have ever won an Oscar — the first being 1927 film "Wings", which was awarded at the first Academy Awards in 1929.

"Hugo", directed by Martin Scorsese, won more in the techical categories. Set in 1930s Paris, it is a 3D adventure drama about a boy embroiled in the mystery of his father's death and an automaton. The film took away the honours in best cinematography, best art direction, best sound editing, best sound mixing and visual effects categories.

Veteran actress Meryl Streep received her third Oscar at the glittering ceremony at the Kodak Theatre here Sunday night. She won the best actress award for her portrayal of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady", which won the best makeup award too.

American actress Octavia Spencer was left in tears as she was awarded the best supporting actress trophy for Reliance DreamWorks' "The Help", in which she essayed the role of a big-mouthed maid named Minny. The best actor in a supporting role award went to Christopher Plummer for "Beginners". At at 82, he is said to be the oldest winner of the golden statuette.

Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash were awarded for the best adapted screenplay of "The Descendants", which has been translated to screen from Kaui Hart Hemmings' eponymous novel, while Woody Allen won the best original screenplay for romantic comedy "Midnight in Paris".

"Rango", a movie about a chameleon, was named the best animated feature film, and "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr.Morris Lessmore" took away the best animated short trophy at the awards gala.

The best foreign film award was given to Iranian film "A Separation", which also won the Golden Globe trophy in the same category this year. India's official entry in the category — Malayalam film "Adaminte Makan Abu", had even failed to make it to the top nine shortlist.

Pakistani documentary film "Saving Face", which uncovers the story of hundreds of people, mostly women who become acid attack victims, received the best documentary (short) title, while "Undefeated" won the award in the best documentary (feature) category.

The Oscar for original song went to "Man and Muppets" from "The Muppets". The number was composed by Bret McKenzie.

The best film editing award was bagged by Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", and the best live action short film went to "The Shore".

Vidya Balan plans ‘dirty dancing’ post-break

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 02:12 AM PST

Vidya Balan wants to improve her vocabulary, on the one hand, to express her feelings towards the success of "The Dirty Picture". On the other, she is looking forward to a break and says post that she will do some "dirty dancing".

After working non-stop for more than two years, she now wants to take a break.

"I am close to saying yes to a film which will not start for another three months. So I really think I need that break because for the past two-and-a-half-years I have been busy with my films. So now I do need that time off to soak everything in. Then I will probably do some dirty dancing," the 33-year-old talented actor told IANS.

An unofficial biopic of southern sex siren Silk Smitha, "The Dirty Picture" saw Vidya shedding all inhibitions to get under the skin of the character and said: "I have become unapologetic about being myself. Probably others think that I don't breathe the same air (laughs). I just take that as a compliment, but I have a long way to go but yes god has been kind."

"I was hoping the film would do well, but I had no idea that the film would do so well. I feel blessed and I am looking for new words for blessed, humbled and overwhelmed."

Unwilling to get typecast or repeat same roles, Vidya will soon be seen stepping out of the sex icon image by playing a pregnant woman in director Sujoy Ghosh's "Kahaani", a thriller that will show what all her character goes through when she flies down to Kolkata to find her missing husband.

"I can't do the same thing again and again. When I am getting variety, then why will I not take that advantage? This woman (in 'Kahaani') is a vulnerable woman who is searching for her husband, but she has not lost her sense of humour. She is a woman of today."

Vidya has been extremely choosy with scripts, but clarifies that it doesn't mean she is narrowing down her options.

"The proposition of success has been humongous, thankfully. But even after 'Paa', 'Ishqiya' and 'No One Killed Jessica', people said what next? Are your options narrowing down? I don't think about these things. If god has brought me so far, he will take me further.

"I am here to act. I am not saying I will do only solo heroine projects or like that. I want to do different genres of films," she said.

Ghosh was shouldering the burden of two flops - "Aladin" and "Home Delivery " - when he approached Vidya, but she was not sceptical about the director and took the plunge.

"When Balki came to me with 'Paa', I had a 'Kismat Konnection' and 'Heyy Babyy' behind me. And when Sujoy came to me, my films were doing well. But he is an intelligent man he is one of the most intelligent men I have met. Two of his films didn't work, but he has put things together this time around. I am hoping it will work out. But I think the intention is right," she said.

Men In Black 3 Will Smith’s brainchild

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 01:43 AM PST

It was actor Will Smith who came up with the idea of the third installment of "Men In Black", says director Barry Sonnenfeld.

The actor reprises his role as alien fighting Agent J in "Men In Black 3″ and Sonnenfeld says the film sees the actor travel back in time to rescue his partner, played by Tommy Lee Jones, reports contactmusic.com.

"Will calls me Baz. When we were shooting 'Men In Black II' (in 2002), one night he said 'Hey Baz, I think I have an idea for number three'. The basic idea was that Will's character, Agent J, would have to go back into the past to save his partner. It allowed the movie to take place in another era, and us to learn more about Tommy Lee Jones' character. But it turned out to be a very long process of development, mainly because of the knotting issues of time travel, the time travel thing was really hard," said Sonnenfeld.

Sonnenfeld also revealed that he started shooting the movie without a finished script, which made the whole process more difficult.

He told Empire magazine: "We knew starting the movie that we didn't have a finished second or third act. Was it responsible? The answer is, if the movie does as well as I think it will, it was genius. If it's a total failure, then it was a really stupid idea."

Saddened at demise of great movie plotlines: SRK

Posted: 26 Feb 2012 08:32 AM PST

Shah Rukh Khan, who was seen in two back-to-back actioners, rues the "demise of great movie plotlines" and also complains that his "information highway" is not so good.

"Saddened at the demise of great movie plot lines. Wotever happened to car chases…macho one liners & sharon stone crossing her legs," tweeted SRK who featured in last year's sci-fi superhero movie "RA.One" as well as the sleek thriller "Don 2: The King Is Back".

The 46-year-old is in London to shoot for Yash Raj Films next project, in which he has teamed up with Katrina Kaif.

While enjoying a lazy Sunday noon, the superstar tweeted: "My information highway sucks …tabloids write sum crap…tv channels ticker tape it…twitter reports it to me…I get to know shit! Q.E.D."

"Close Open Details QED is an abbreviation for a Latin term which means wot needed to be proved or demonstrated has been shown….or simply put…there got it!"

His earlier posts read: "Close Open Details… i read somewhere…i went searching for truth and found facts instead. Happens to all of us…its hugely annoying and very inconvenient..

"Late work call. In bed doing nothing…nada…nought. Work has a future pay off…laziness pays off now! Eternal nothingness for half hour."
