Posted: 13 Feb 2012 03:35 AM PST Dhoni Movie Review, Dhoni Review, Dhoni Movie Rating, Dhoni Movie verdict, Dhoni Movie story, Dhoni Movie climax, Cast: Prakash Raj, Akash Jagannath, Radhika Apte, Brahmanandham, Thanikala Bharani, Thalaivasal Vijay, Nasser Director: Prakash Raj Producer: Prakash Raj Music: Ilayaraja Rating: 3/5 Prakash Raj, an all-rounder, has now proved to be a dependable captain with his new role as director. His directorial venture "Dhoni" is all about change as the movie highlights the flaws in the present education system. Subramanyam (Prakash Raj) alias Subbu is a government employee. He has two children - a son and a daughter. Subbu does a part time job to ensure that his son Karthick (Akash) and daughter get a good education. The daughter fulfils her father's the expectations, but the son is more interested in sports. His attention is more on cricket than studies. His idolizes Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his passion to become like the World Cup winning captain affects his studies. After his continuous bad performances in school, the school management decides to withhold his result. Subbu gets upset and abuses his son, both verbally and physically. Unable to bear it, the boy slips into a coma. Son's unconscious state opens the eyes of Subbu who feels terribly sorry for his act. He realises that he has made a big mistake. He slowly understands that there is nothing wrong in the son. He realizes that it is the education system that puts pressure on kids. He feels that the whole education system should be changed. Thus Subbu starts a mission, while his son is undergoing treatment. Watch the movie to know what transpires next. Prakash Raj has done a marvellous job in "Dhoni". He undertakes all the responsibilities with amazing ease. His acting and handling the subject as director are outstanding. He has driven home the message in a sound manner. Yes, the film is preachy at times and it is also predictable after a point. But Prakash Raj has managed to provide us with an entertainer with a strong message. Akash (son of popular Telugu filmmaker Puri Jagannadh) fits the bill well. Others including Brahmanandam, Tannikella Bharani, Radhika Apte, and Nasser have done their respective jobs well. Ilayaraja's music and K.V. Guhan's cinematography lift the movie to a great extent. The veteran musician gives life to the script with his songs and background score while the young cinematographer adds colour to the fare. The film's pace is not so appealing and the drama in the climax is uncalled for. Barring the drawbacks, "Dhoni" leaves an impact. The powerful performances and the sensitive narrative make it a watchable fare. Verdict : Entertaining film with strong message ![]() -IANS

Posted: 12 Feb 2012 07:32 PM PST SMS Telugu Movie Review, SMS Movie rating, SMS Movie verdict, SMS Movie climax, SMS Movie story, Cast: Sudhir Babu, Regina, Vennela Kishor, Chanti, Priyanka, Hemanth, Rohini Director: Satya Tatineni Producer: Vikram Raju Music: Selva Ganesh Rating: 3/5 "SMS" is a remake of Tamil film "Shiva Manasulo Sakthi", which was made with new faces and did well at the box office. Satya Tatineni, who made a mark with his debut film "Bheemili Kabaddi Jattu" (another remake), has helmed the movie, which introduces Sudhir Babu, cousin of superstar Mahesh Babu, in the lead role. There is nothing fresh in the story of the film, but has a neat narrative. There are no big fight sequences, thunderous dialogues and sexy item numbers. Even the story is not strong enough to build up interesting emotional sequences. But what makes the film so likeable is its breezy style of narration and comedy elements. Both Chanty and Vennela Kishore have added spark to the comedy sequences, which takes a journey from being slapstick to sensible. Though the first half is enjoyable, the latter part has many unnecessary turns, which are predictable and reminds one of Hindi movies "Chalte Chalte" and "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi". The film is basically aimed at attracting the young crowd and has elements that will appeal to the youngsters. There are enough pranks but some time they are stretched too far. There are no tension in the this romantic film, but that is not a problem as there are enough sequences which relate to pranks and ego clashes. Shiva works for a courier company. He falls in love with Radio Jockey Shruthi. Despite his attempts to impress her failing one after another, Shiva does not lose hope. Finally, Shruthi accepts his proposal, but Shiva's confused attitude troubles her. The relationship between Shiva and Shruthi turns sour, but finally all things end well. Sudhir Babu plays the courier assistant's role with ease. He impresses with his dance movements. But he needs to improve upon his dialogue delivery. Regina, who had worked in Tamil and Kannada films earlier, charms the viewers by her looks and her performance. The viewers will surely appreciate Chanty and Vennela's comedy. "SMS" is a time pass movie, but is worth every single penny that you spend on buying the ticket. Verdict : Good time pass, worth the money ![]() - IANS

Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Movie Review Posted: 12 Feb 2012 08:11 AM PST Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Tamil Movie Review, Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Movie Review, Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Review, Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Movie rating, Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Movie verdict, Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Movie climax, Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam Movie story, Cast: Sonia Agarwal, Yogi Devaraj, Girija, Raj Kapoor, Manobala, Ganja Karuppu, Kovai Sarala, Nicole Director : Rajkrishna Producer : Punnagai Poovae Geetha Music : Aadhisha Rating : 1.5/5 Journalist-turned-director Rajkrishna has helmed "Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam " and has made a bold attempt to expose the dark underbelly of tinsel town. Though the subject is sensitive as it deals with the dignity of a woman who enters showbiz, the movie fails to deal with the theme genuinely. "Oru Nadigayin Vakkumoolam", which marks Sonia Agarwal's comeback, has come out as a half-baked attempt. Anjali (Sonia) is a popular actress, who goes missing one day. A journalist ('Punnagai Poo' Geetha) takes it upon himself to find her. After running from pillar to post, he discovers Anjali's whereabouts as well as some shocking facts. The flashback shows that Anjali hails from Andhra Pradesh. She is the daughter of a poor artiste ('Yogi' Devaraj) and comes to Chennai with her mother to become an actress. The mother and the daughter knock at every possible door for work, but have to face disappointment. After some bitter experiences they realise that nothing is possible without casting couch. Left with no other option, Anjali decides to take a plunge into the murky world. And lady luck smiles on her and she becomes a top actress. But after becoming successful, Anjali decides to disappear when she realises that her mother and other family members are with her only for her money. Rajkrishna, who gathered plenty of stories about actresses' exploitation in the film industry, should be applauded for showing the guts to tell them on big screen. However, he has failed to narrate it deftly. His handling of the subject lacks maturity. A theme that had the potential to be an engrossing tale turns out to be a dull fare with diluted and archaic approach. The narrative style is outdated. The proceedings are disjointed and the screenplay lacks any coherence or logic. Lengthy dialogues are quite boring. Performance wise Sonia gets into the skin of her character and enacts her role well. Others don't seem to have understood what to do with their characters. Music, editing and other technical departments too have let the film down. Rajkrishna has wasted a theme that could have been turned into an impactful movie. Taking up a sensitive issue and diluting shows that there is a lack of concern and commitment towards the subject. The end makes us think that the journalist has just used the theme to get adequate coverage in the media. Such futile attempts only weakens genuine voices raised with real concern against the exploitation. Verdict - ham-handed approach mars ![]() - IANS

Posted: 12 Feb 2012 07:07 AM PST LOL Movie Review, LOL Hollywood Movie Review, LOL Review, LOL Movie verdict, LOL Movie rating, Cast : Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Ashley Greene and Douglas Booth Director : Lisa Azuelos Producer : Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher Studio : Lionsgate Films Rating : 3.5/5 The battle between the generations has always made for enticing cinema. Yet nowhere in history has the generation gap between the young and the little older been more apparent than in our technologically advanced world where there are so many websites to 'connect' us all yet so less 'human' connection. "LOL" navigates in the no man's land between the two generations and though there's really nothing new, its light, breezy manner and gentle humour that thankfully works to push the drama forward than trying to force you to laugh and works to make a pleasant and fulfilling film. And with its various shades of love — between teenagers, people way past their romantic prime, mother and daughter etc, it becomes the perfect film to watch on Valentine's Day. As if dealing with her complicated love life with a cheating boyfriend, who she breaks up with wasn't enough, under-18 Lola has to content with her divorcee mother having an affair with her father. To 'complicate' things further, she finds herself falling for the best friend of her ex-boyfriend. Lola navigates the minefield that is teenage life, through the complicated multiple lives she lives on social media and in school that result in sometimes tearful and at other, poignant moments. It shows in very interesting manner how despite so much technology that is meant to 'connect' them, teenagers often find it difficult to connect with those around, be it their lovers, friends or parents. "LOL", a remake of a 2008 French film of the same name, navigates its material well. Though there are many subplots, it does not lose way or get too gregariously close with any one of them. It resolves them with a lightness of writing and direction that makes it a very pleasing watch. There is no attempt at making a melodrama and neither does it dwell on the seemingly frivolous complaints and heartbreaks of the kids in the film. This command perhaps comes because writer and director Lisa Azuelos's last film was the original French. If there were any mistake in the original, she obviously has had enough time to improve upon it. Demi Moore plays a conflicted and overwhelmed single mom unsure when to be strict and when to be lenient with her daughter. She confidently sheds her 'sexy' image in a role that will perhaps herald the second innings of her acting career. Though the film is about love and generation-gap, it is something everyone would relate to in their own way. It could have been made anytime and would have worked. However, in our times of too much technology with sufficient technology infused in the film, it works even better. It is a must watch for parents struggling to connect with their 'connected' kids and for young people who don't know why their parent's can't understand them. Verdict : Predictable but fun Valentine's Day watch ![]() - IANS
Posted: 12 Feb 2012 06:55 AM PST Whitney Houston dead, Pop star Whitney Houston passed away, Whitney Houston dies at 48, Pop star Whitney Houston passes away, One of the world's best-selling and highly awarded music artists, Whitney Houston was found dead in a California hotel. She was 48. She was found dead in a hotel room in Beverly Hills. She had been into drugs and had checked into rehab a couple of times. Authorities have not revealed the cause of her death. A gospel and pop singer, Houston had carved a niche for herself with her vibrant and often spectacular singing style. Houston, who sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide, was born Aug 9, 1963, in Newark and embarked on her musical journey at the age of 11. The six-time Grammy award winner created a Guinness world record by winning 415 honours in her career. In her initial years, Houston sang in church during her initial years. Later, she performed with her mother at night clubs. But her true calling came in 1985 with her debut album "Whitney Houston". In 1986, she won her first Grammy for the song "Saving All My Love for You". Thus begun her journey of musical heights, awards and popularity and for a decade she ruled the music roost. She released her second album "Whitney" in 1987 and it was described as the first album by a woman to enter the Billboard charts at No. 1, and it included four No. 1 singles. In her successful musical career, she also tried rhythm and blues for her third album "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" in 1990 and boasted of three more No. 1 singles. Her talent was such that her albums were million-sellers, and two have sold more than 10 million copies in the US alone - her 1985 debut album and the 1992 soundtrack "The Bodyguard," which includes "I Will Always Love You". According to New York Times, from the start of her career she had the talent, looks and pedigree of a pop superstar. Her range spanned three octaves, and her voice was plush, vibrant and often spectacular. She could pour on the exuberant flourishes of gospel or peal a simple pop chorus; she could sing sweetly or unleash a sultry rasp. Dressed in everything from formal gowns to T-shirts, she cultivated the image of a fun-loving but ardent good girl, the voice behind songs as perky as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and as torchy as what became her signature song, a version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You", NYT said. She didnt stop there. In the 1990s, she forayed into acting with films like "The Bodyguard" and "The Preacher's Wife" and tied the knot with R&B; singer Bobby Brown in 1992. If on one hand her career scaled new heights, this was also the time when she became a "heavy" user of marijuana and cocaine, which she revealed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Her film career was equally successful and after making the films "Waiting To Exhale" in 1995 and "The Preacher's Wife" in 1996 - which gave her the occasion to make a gospel album - Houston returned to pop with "My Love Is Your Love" in 1998. Meanwhile, she continued with drugs, which took a toll on her voice and by 2000s her voice became scratchier and less secure, and her performances grew erratic, reports New York Times. Also, her marriage to the singer Bobby Brown turned out to be the worst decision of her life — Houston told Winfrey that after initial passion died, it became a turbulent marriage, marred by drug use and by his professional jealousy, psychological abuse and physical confrontations. It affected her singing and it was evident when in 2000s, her singles slipped from the top 10. Not only that, Houston became a favourite tabloid subject and even pubished pictures of her bathroom stocked with drugs. Houston and Brown had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993 and after a 14 year turbulent relationship in 2007, they divorced but by that time the damage had been done.
