Life-Altering Fruit Juicer of the Day

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 01:09 PM PST

Quit squeezing juice out of fruits like a sucker. Suck the juice out of fruits like a winner instead!

Takara Tomy’s Gurefuru Chuchu turns any citrus fruit into a self-contained drink by puncturing a hole in their skin and then churning up their insides. It’s morbidly delicious!

Watch the incredibly Japanese promo spot above, then pick one up here.

Follow Up of the Day: Nestle Girl Scout Candy Bars

Follow Up of the Day: Confirmed: Nestle has officially teamed up with the Girl Scouts of America to produce a line of candy bars combining the famous flavors of both entities.

“We are thrilled with the positive response to the Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Candy Bar,” said Girl Scouts rep Joshua Ackley. “The product photo is a retail sales sample and not available for sale at this time. Look forward to some very exciting news in June.”

No word at this time on which additional flavors will be part of the line, but you should probably start making room in your belly right about now.

Toy Chain Boycott of the Day

Toy Chain Boycott of the Day

One Million Moms, the conservative group which previously targeted JCPenney for hiring Ellen as their new spokesperson and Clorox for its “sexual” Liquid-Plumr ad, has extended its not-quite-one-million talons in the direction of Toys R Us, calling for a boycott of the chain over its stocking of an Archie comic featuring the same-sex marriage of character Kevin Keller.

The American Family Association-affiliated organization published the following statement on their website:

Unfortunately, children are now being exposed to same-sex marriage in a toy store. This is the last place a parent would expect to be confronted with questions from their children on topics that are too complicated for them to understand. Issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon, which is becoming extremely common and unnecessary.

Archie Comics CEO John Goldwater quickly issued a retort, saying, in part:

As I've said before, Riverdale is a safe, welcoming place that does not judge anyone. It's an idealized version of America that will hopefully become reality someday. We're sorry the American Family Association/OneMillionMoms.com feels so negatively about our product, but they have every right to their opinion, just like we have the right to stand by ours. Kevin Keller will forever be a part of Riverdale, and he will live a happy, long life free of prejudice, hate and narrow-minded people.

Toys R Us has yet to comment.

On-Air Blooper of the Day

JET 24 sports reporter Craig Smylie screws up and wants to do another take. That wouldn’t be as much of a problem if his segment were being pre-recorded and not, you know, airing live.

RIP: Davy Jones, at 66

RIP: Davy Jones, at 66

Davy Jones, founding member of the popular 60′s rock group The Monkees, passed away this morning of a heart attack in a hospital near his Florida home. He was 66.

Jones, the only musician signed to a studio deal before auditioning for Bob Rafelson’s and Bert Schneider’s made-for-TV music group The Monkees, was the lead vocalist on many of the band’s most memorable songs, including “Daydream Believer” and “I Wanna Be Free.”

After the Monkees’ disbanded in 1971, Jones continued to perform as a solo artist, and also made several appearances on TV shows, most often as himself.

Jones reunited last year with fellow band members Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork for a three-month tour of Europe and North American entitled An Evening with The Monkees: The 45th Anniversary Tour.

He is survived by his wife Jessica, and four daughters from previous marriages.

How About That of the Day

How About That of the Day

La Bougie du Sapeur (Sapper’s Candle) — named after a French comic-book character born on Leap Day — is a satirical newspaper founded in 1980 which is published only once every four years, on February 29th.

Jean d’Indy, editor of the quadrennial newspaper, says he and his writers gather at a restaurant ahead of Leap Day, and down a bottle of bubbly before getting down to brass tacks.

“We try not to be naughty; we just try to be funny,” d’Indy says. “But we are not funny. Life is funny. So, it’s the way of seeing life which is funny.”

Whatever that means.

The paper sells for $5 a copy, and all proceeds go to benefit charities. With a circulation of 150,000, La Bougie du Sapeur easily outsells all other French papers published today.

D’Indy says at one point he considered offering subscriptions, but dropped the idea when he realized it would too difficult to track down subscribers every four years.
