Survivorman of the Day

Survivorman of the Day: A 45-year-old man in Sweden has reportedly managed to survive for two months trapped inside a snowed-in car with no food and only a sleeping bag to keep warm.

Snowmobilers who spotted his vehicle near the northern city of Umea initially believed it to be an abandoned wreck. Upon clearing away the snow, they discovered a dangerously thin person living inside.

“Just incredible that he’s alive considering that he had no food, but also since it’s been really cold for some time after Christmas,” said a rescue team member.

Doctors believe the man managed to survive by going into a “dormant-like state,” similar to ursine hibernation. “Humans can do that,” said doctor Stefan Branth. “He probably had a body temperature of around 31 degrees (Celsius) which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up.”

It remained unclear how the man found himself stuck in the snow to begin with.

Another Follow Up of the Day: “Chink” Writer Fired

Another Follow Up of the Day: "Chink" Writer Fired

Another Follow Up of the Day: The ESPN employee responsible for penning the controversial “Chink In The Armor” headline that accompanied the network’s article on the Knicks’ winning-streak-snapping loss to the Hornets has been let go.

The racially insensitive title ran beneath a photo of Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin on the network’s website for some 30 minutes before being removed.

ESPN further announced the 30-day suspension of anchor Max Bretos, who used the same phrase in reference to Lin last Wednesday. Another incident involving the phrase, which occurred Friday on ESPN Radio New York, will not result in any action, as the person who uttered the words was no an employee of ESPN.

“We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin,” the network said in a statement. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. “Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.”

Follow Up of the Day: The Colbert Report Returns

Follow Up of the Day: After a short hiatus, The Colbert Report is set to resume production tomorrow according to a Comedy Central spokesperson.

The show aired reruns for the better part of last week after Wednesday’s taping was cancelled at the last minute “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Though no official statement has been released concerning the reason behind the sudden production halt, sources close to Colbert said he took time off to take care of his 91-year-old mother, Lorna, who had fallen ill.

He appeared to acknowledge these reports on Friday, when he took to Twitter to thank fans on behalf of himself and his family for “their thoughts and prayers.”

Colbert’s guest tomorrow will be award-winning author Ann Patchett.

Santorum Santorum Says of the Day

Santorum Santorum Says of the Day

Santorum Santorum Says of the Day: On today’s Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer asked presidential candidate Rick Santorum to clarify his controversial statement from yesterday, that “free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions.”

But rather than double back, Santorum instead chose to double down, saying that certain types of prenatal testing that are used to detect fetal abnormalities should not be offered for free as they “encourage abortions.”

“We're talking about specifically prenatal testing and specifically amniocentesis,” Santorum said, “which is a… procedure that creates a risk of miscarriage when you have it and is done for the purposes of identifying maladies of a child in the womb, which in many cases, in fact, most cases, physicians recommend, particularly if there's a problem, recommend abortion.”

A study conducted in 2006 by researchers at Mouth Sinai found that the risk of miscarriage from amniocentesis — a procedure necessary for the detection of chromosomal abnormalities (such as Down syndrome) and fetal infections — is 0.06%. In fact, there was no difference in “loss rate” between patients who had undergone amniocentesis, and those who had not

Santorum, whose daughter was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Edwards syndrome, took issue with President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which guarantees free-of-charge access to prenatal testing.

In Memoriam of the Day:

In Memoriam of the Day: Friends and family of the late Whitney Houston gathered this afternoon at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark to bid farewell to the hometown girl who got her start singing in that church’s choir.

“We are here today, hearts broken but yet with God’s strength we celebrate the life of Whitney Houston,” said Rev. Joe A. Carter at the opening of the four-hour ceremony.

Moving “expressions” from Tyler Perry, Kevin Costner, and Clive Davis followed, punctuated later by emotional performances by Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder.

Aretha Franklin, who was scheduled to perform as well, cancelled earlier today due to leg spasms. At her Radio City Music Hall concert last night, Franklin asked the crown to remember Houston hits and “forget the misses.”

Considering the rocky life she led, it was somehow fitting for her “homegoing” ceremony to encounter a few bumps.

Ex-husband Bobby Brown left the church early after allegedly being asked to leave. It was reported that Brown arrived with an entourage of nine people despite being asked to bring no more than two people along. His request to sit with his nine companions in the family section near his daughter, Bobbi Kristina, is said to have elicited negative reactions from other family members, and he was ultimately asked to exit the building.
