Say What Now of the Day

Posted: 16 Feb 2012 12:26 PM PST

Say What Now of the Day: Asked by about Rick Santorum’s stance on social issues, American businessman and principal Santorum bankroller Foster Friess told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell that he doesn’t get American’s “preoccupation with sex.”

Addressing the topic of contraception specifically, Friess said “Back in my days, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraceptives — the gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.”

According to a Dear Abby column unearthed by Think Progress, this appears to be “joke advice” that some people have unfortunately taken seriously — with inevitable results.

Immediately following Friess’s remark, Bayer’s stock spiked in value, reaching its highest figure in months.

Dress Code Violation of the Day

Dress Code Violation of the Day

Dress Code Violation of the Day: Brigham Young University student Brittany Molina thought she was getting a love note when a fellow student handed her a folded piece of paper while she was standing around the school’s Provo campus on Valentine’s Day.

But when she opened it up, she discovered not an admission of attraction, but instead a strongly worded criticism of her attire.

“You may want to consider that what you’re wearing has a negative effect on men (and women) around you,” read the letter. “Many people come to this university because they feel safe, morally as well as physically, here. They expect others to abide by the Honor Code that we all agreed on. Please consider your commitment to the Honor Code (which you agreed to) when dressing each day. Thank you.”

Molina posted the piece of paper on Twitter along with a photo of what she was wearing when she received it. ”Gosh dang it,” she tweeted, “I’ll remember to dress in jeans, a sweatshirt and tennis shoes tomorrow. That way I don’t make people feel uncomfortable.”

According to Molina, the young man who handed her the note “was gone within 5 seconds.” BYU has not commented on this incident.

Follow Up of the Day: "Yellowgirl" Lisa Chan Apologizes For Racist Ad

Follow Up of the Day: Lisa Chan, the Asian-American actress who appeared in former Michigan congressman Pete Hoekstra’s widely excoriated “Yellow Peril” campaign ad, has formally apologized for agreeing to play the part of a Chinese stereotype.

“I am deeply sorry for any pain that the character I portrayed brought to my communities,” Chan wrote in a Facebook post.

She continued:

As a recent college grad who has spent time working to improve communities and empower those without a voice, this role is not in any way representative of who I am. It was absolutely a mistake on my part and one that, over time, I hope can be forgiven. I feel horrible about my participation and I am determined to resolve my actions.

The 21-year-old UC Berkeley graduate is the founder of a nonprofit organization for at-risk youth. She made headlines last year after she dubbed herself “Miss Napa Valley USA” despite not living in Napa County in order to compete in the 2012 Miss California pageant.

This Thing Looks Like That Thing of the Day

This Thing Looks Like That Thing of the Day: I tried desperately to pretend that I was above posting a photo of a dog that resembles a hairy penis, but, at the end of the day, if we’re being totally honest with ourselves, we arrive at the realization that none of us is, are ever will be, above hairy penis dog.

And that’s okay.

When Life Imitates Alice In Wonderland of the Day

When Life Imitates Alice In Wonderland of the Day: An adorable sleepy dormouse was found snoring inside a tea shop in Lyme Regis and brought to the Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre in Somerset inside coconut shell.

He reportedly awoke for a time to greet Sir Terry Pratchett, who stopped by the centre to help launch a fundraising initiative for a new Wildlife Teaching Hospital.

The Dormouse will be returned to its habitat in Lyme once his hibernation period ends in the Spring.

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), is holding a meeting today entitled “Lines Crossed” to review President Obama’s health care mandate compromise requiring employers and insurers to provide employees with coverage for contraception.

Despite acceptance from both religious organizations and women’s groups, Republicans are opposed to the requirement, and seek to allow employers to decline contraception coverage at will.

Though the hearing concerns women and their reproductive rights, Rep. Issa has refused to allow female witnesses to testify at the hearing, saying it was “not about reproductive rights and contraception but instead about the Administration's actions as they relate to freedom of religion and conscience.”

Following this statement, Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) left the room in protest.

Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY) — who recently called opponents of abortion “heroes” — remained seated as an all-male panel (above) opened the hearing.

Watch committee members criticise Rep. Issa’s decision after the jump:
