Birds of America the Worlds Most Expensive Book

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 12:51 AM PST

Birds of America was first published as a series of sections between 1827 and 1838. Only 119 copies were published of which fewer than a dozen are in private hands. Each of the printed book were colored by hand, and it was an extremely laborious process. Even by today's standards, the vividness of its illustrations of birds is extraordinary but when it was being released in the 1830s it was mindboggling.Audubon employed a rather shocking technique to produce the book. He hunted the birds down and shot them before propping them up on wires to paint. Each drawing would take about 60 hours to complete. Ironically, many of his beautifully rendered subjects are now extinct, such as the Carolina Parakeet, Passenger Pigeon, Labrador Duck, Great Auk, Esquimaux Curlew, and Pinnated Grouse.

Winter Swimming in Siberia

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 09:10 AM PST

Would you do this at - 36C? I would never do it, I simply couldn't. But these people from a local club in Krasnoyarsk went swimming in the Yenisei River on December 12, while the air temperature was -36C. The Yenisei River goes through portions of northern Russia and Mongolia before depositing into the Arctic. I don't know how they are doing it, but judging by the look on their faces it can be said that they enjoy it a lot…It's just crazy! I'm freezing now.

Finger Monkeys

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 09:10 AM PST

The finger monkey is the tiniest living primate in the world. It's so small that it can hold on to your finger. This cute little primate hugs and grips on to your finger so tight that it pulls your heartstrings and you wish you could take it home with you. Finger monkeys are, as a matter of fact, pygmy marmosets. They are also known by the names 'pocket monkey' and 'tiny lion'. These primates belong to the family Callitrichidae, species Cebuella and genus C. pygmaea. They are native to rain-forests of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia. (Source: )
